Coursera is one of the largest online learning platforms in the world.
“We envision a world where anyone, anywhere can transform their life by accessing the world’s best learning experience.”
Coursera has Specializations and courses ranging from Computer, Social and Data Sciences to Creative Writing and Grammar.
I thought it would be good to create a page where people could post links to our favourite courses.
Please give the title of the course you are recommending in the comments section, a short paragraph about what it offers and what you gained from taking it. Don’t forget to include the link!
I have a few to start.
The Creative Writing Specialization, of course.
“Our courses are designed for anyone from the aspiring short story writer to established novelist. Whether you have a finished novel sitting on your desk calling for a fresh look or have had the germ of an idea for a decade, this Specialization gives you tools to achieve your goal”
I can’t say enough about these five courses. The Specialization is offered by Wesleyan University and the Instructors are all published authors and know their stuff. The Mentors in all five modules are extremely helpful and giving of their time and knowledge. How to express what I gained from these courses…of course, they improved my writing ten-fold. But, it went deeper than that. As I was gaining a better understanding of writing, I was developing friendships in the forums with people who I am still friends with today. We are publishing a book together and I’m quite sure we are friends for life. Through circumstances, I became the Group Leader of over 150 writers on Scribophile (and growing). I’m loving the direction my life is going since taking these courses. If you have any interest in writing at all, take them.
The Strategic Leadership Specialization is seven courses of intense training that will enhance your leadership and business skills:
“The Specialization covers the strategic, human resource, and organizational foundations for creating and capturing value for sustainable competitive advantage – including how to manage people and organizations, analyze the competition, and develop strategies both within a business and across a portfolio of businesses.”
Through the courses, I learned how to lead with my head AND heart. To make sure there is inclusiveness in decision-making and how to use groups to my advantage. I highly recommend these courses for anyone interested in furthering their career in a leadership role. It is part of the University of Illinois Master of Business Administration degree program, the iMBA.
The Inspirational Leadership: Leading with Sense Specialization is four courses and is offered through HEC Paris. Their protocol of Savoir-Relier is based on more than 25 years of research and practice.
You will explore your own leadership style through conversations with your peers, and acquire the necessary self-confidence to make good decisions based on the opinions and ideas of others, even if they are contradictory
I am learning how to be an inspirational leader, rather than a heavy-handed one. These courses are helping me to open my mind to other people’s opinions and to lead based on sense and trust.
“This online course is offered in an innovative, multi-level format, comprising: * Comprehensive lectures by leading researchers from Tel Aviv University and Yad Vashem. * A wealth of voices and viewpoints presented by guest lecturers. * Numerous documents, photos, testimonies and works of art from the time of the Holocaust. * Novel learning experience: Crowd sourcing – involving the learners themselves in the act of collecting and shaping information, via unique, exciting online assignments.”
Going into these courses, I thought I knew a lot. But, they helped me understand how Hitler’s ideology could spread through Europe. I still can’t comprehend the abominations that took place, but I understand now how it happened. I highly recommend these courses to anyone with even the slightest interest in the Holocaust.
